Laptop performance has generally been inferior to desktops of the same price. Desktops have outperformed mobile computers because new technologies expend more heat. These new technologies take time to transfer over to the laptop market because of its smaller size. While desktops continue to outperform notebooks at the high end, both types of systems generally offer sufficient performance for the mainstream. However, this still existent difference in performance continues to be minimized.

Upgradability

Laptops generally cost more than a desktop computer of similar specification. Performance is usually lower than that of a comparable desktop because of the compromises necessary to keep weight and power consumption low.

Upgradeability is severely limited: typically only the RAM and hard drive can be upgraded. Often the CPU can also be replaced, and sometimes video card modules are upgradeable too. Many laptops also include a MiniPCI slot inside, however it is usually not intended to be utilized by the end user. Because nearly all functions are integrated into the proprietary-design main board theoretically to save space and power, laptops are difficult to repair and upgrade. Outright replacement of faulty parts can include the display screen, drives, daughterboard's, modem, storage devices and other components, but repair costs can be high, even when feasible (low upgradeability). Security

Laptops are generally prized targets of theft, and theft of laptops can often lead to much more serious problems such as identity theft. According to the FBI, 97 percent of stolen laptops are never recovered. Laptops are mostly stolen from hotel rooms, automobiles, coffee shops, and other such places. If you have a reason to carry a laptop with you, be wary of your surroundings. If you have doubts about security at a location where you plan to take your laptop, do not take it. Avoid using your laptop's wireless capabilities at public places with access points to access Internet-based services (such as e-mail accounts without security) since a lot of data can be easily intercepted over the network. If you must leave the notebook unattended, put it on a cable lock, and secure it well. Avoid leaving it in your automobile, but if you must, do not leave it in plain view. Put it under a seat, or somewhere where it won't be spotted.
